Africa Interests

Applied Psychology

Information The purpose of our group is quite simply to bring together, like-minded individuals that enjoy each other’s company - individuals that want to learn something new about themselves, each other and the human condition in general - individuals that like to take an active part in lively debate - or to simply sit, listen and ponder - and it’s always a bonus when we come away from a meeting having thoroughly enjoyed the experience! When it comes to levels of disclosure, this remains very much with the individual and the amount of emotional commitment they wish to give to the subject in hand. We believe that we are all jointly responsible for creating and maintaining an environment wherein all our differing personalities can feel safe and comfortable - so that we can give of ourselves as much, or as little, as we want. Sessions are thought provoking and also great fun! This group is very much run by the members - for the members, and as such we take it in turns to introduce and lead on any subject which raises our interest. This could come from an article in a newspaper or a book or even a personal experience. Part of each meeting centres around an activity - often involving breaking up into small discussion groups before all of us come back together towards the end of the session to share learning and points of interest. No expertise in psychology is required to join the group - just an interest in the topic. None of us are experts although some of us have studied the topic in the past or have worked as counsellors or psychology teachers. There is a small fee, currently £15.00 per year, to cover venue costs.

Art Appreciation 1

Information The Art Appreciation group meets at Place House on the second Thursday of the month followed by a trip out to a gallery or other venue on the third Thursday of the month. There is a different theme each academic year covering fine arts, decorative arts and architecture.

Information We are a friendly group of painters of varying experience and styles. We meet to work on our own projects and sometimes a set "challenge" and to view each others work on the day. We decided to include a wide variety of genres and authors, to make it interesting and to encourage members to read books that they may not have chosen otherwise. Bowls - Short Mat

Information We are a small group of players of about 24 who enjoy a game of bowls on a Monday and or Friday morning for two hours at Wodson Park South Hall. The standard of play varies from beginners to county standard but not competitive, just a social roll up. New players are always welcome. Woods (bowls) are available to learn and practise with. A change of footwear is required, clean soft shoes so as not to damage or dirty the mats. Come and join us. Tuition is available.

Bridge

Information The Group Leader is a qualified teacher who teaches in accordance with the English Bridge Union method. Members of this group are of mixed ability and beginners are particularly welcome. More experienced players, some of whom have been with the group for a while, are always on hand to help those new to Bridge. As players get more proficient, they often join one of the many non-U3A groups in the area

Choir

Information We meet at the Southern Maltings in Kibes Lane, Ware 11.00 to 12.00 on Fridays in term time. We have a tutor, Sarah Frecknall who is a professional singer and choir director. Cost is £5.00 per session. We usually meet in the Southern Maltings Cafe at the end of our session to chat and meet new singers (currently under refurbishment). We sing a variety of songs, members do not need to be able to read music - we are a friendly group and always welcome new members. WE HAVE NOW STOPPED FOR THE SUMMER AND RETURN FRIDAY 5 SEPTEMBER. Creative Writing

Information We meet on the third Monday of the month in the afternoon at each other's homes, where we take it in turn to read what we have written on a suggested subject or one of our own choice, about which we try to be encouraging. We usually also write for 15 minutes on a subject chosen by the host. Croquet

Information Croquet is a game played in teams on grass using six iron hoops and four wooden balls per team and a wooden centre peg. It can also be played as a single or double pair in a team. In singles the players play with two balls each. In doubles, it is one ball a piece. We play mainly Association croquet but also enjoy playing golf croquet rules. We play on up to six full size lawns and enjoy various social events during the season. Most of our new members start with no knowledge of the game, so the more experienced members give them lessons on how to play and explain the rules. No special clothing is required but we do ask members to wear flat footwear. All members share in the tasks of laying out the courts and putting the equipment away at the end of the session. Some members choose to buy their own mallet which can be purchased from the group. The season runs from after Easter to the end of October which is about 30 sessions Cost: £3 per session plus £1 for hire of a mallet if required plus a £20 joining fee. We are a very friendly group and enjoy social events throughout the season. We aim to have 5 lawns in operation each session with 4 players per lawn rotating each week. This is followed by tea and biscuits.

Cycling

Information There are currently two groups catering for different classes of riders: Moderate group for those with some experience of cycling on country roads and occasionally towpaths, ca 15-25 miles depending on weather conditions. Rides start at 9.45am. If more than 6-8 people turn up, we would split into 2 or more groups for safety reasons. E-bikes are welcome, we have several in our group. Advanced group, for the more regular rider 25-30 miles and up to 35 miles in summer, commences 15 mins earlier at 9.30am All groups start from Ware Station. We normally finish our rides between 12 - 1pm for coffee and eats. New riders always welcome. Please contact the Group Leader. Graham taking over from Eric end 2021

Dance Group

Information This is a fun dance class for all abilities. We learn a new routine every couple of weeks, ranging from Cha-cha and Jive to Salsa and Charleston and everything in between! You do not need a partner or experience. The emphasis is on fun and is a good way of keeping fit and having a laugh in a friendly atmosphere! We can accept more members 13/04/2024 Cost: £3 payable to Wodson at reception and £3 per week (payable monthly in advance) for the instructor

Day Out in September

Information If you wish to take advantage of the last rays of the Summer, join us for a day out beside the sea. With our guide Claire, we will drive through Aldeburgh and have a stop in Thorpeness for a walk and time to yourself. We then make our way to Dunwich, where we will stop for lunch, price inclusive. We will then go on to Southwold, again Claire can take you for a walk, or take a stroll along the pier. Price: £53.75 inclusive. Pick up times are Amwell and Van Hagues 8.00am; Priory 8.05; Fire Station. Kings Hill, 8.10; Wodson, on the roundabout, 8.15am.

Downton Abbey

Information We are delighted to offer a visit to Highclere Castle in Hampshire or, as we know it, Downton Abbey on Thursday 23rd July 2026. Highclere Castle has been transformed from its roots in Anglo Saxon Times, to a Medieval Palace, a Tudor Place House, a Georgian House and today this iconic Victorian Castle. It sits within a park designed by Capability Brown. We will have a tour of the Castle; we also will have access to an Egyptian Exhibition. The discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922, was made by 5th Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter. There are gardens to explore. Also, a tearoom selling everything you could want to eat, please note they do not offer vegan food. There is also a shop, where you can buy hats, jewellery and of course, books on Downton Abbey! Exploring London 4

Information We are now in our eleventh year of exploring London and are still finding lots of different places to see using Blue Badge Guides whose knowledge of London never fails to amaze us. We meet at Ware Station and travel up to London together. We are a very friendly group and usually have around thirty people joining us each month. Cost: Variable depending on venue, numbers and use of Guide

Exploring London 6

Information We are a friendly group with about fifty members. Walks are arranged with a Blue Badge Guide visiting historical areas of London as well as famous landmarks. We usually meet at Ware Station and travel together to our destination. The walks last for about two hours and you are then free to make plans for the rest of the day. The costs vary depending on the walk (usually £8-£10 for a guide plus travel expenses)

Exploring London 7     

When 3rd Thursday of the month
Information London Walks cost on average £8.50 for Super Adults 65+ and the duration is two hours, however some trips will cost more. Details of the costs will be given when informing you of the trip. They will take place come rain or shine and will end near a Tube station.

Exploring London 8     

When 3rd or last Wednesday of the month
Information A friendly group of people,, tours are arranged with blue badge guides around London and its landmarks. Tours typically cost £8-£10. The group meets at Ware station to travel together to destinations.

Food Appreciation     

When Once a month
Information We meet in the evening for a meal and socialising once a month in a different local restaurant or pub to enjoy a two or three course meal in friendly and hospitable surroundings. Our past venues have included many well known local establishments and the Catering Department of the Hertford Regional College to sample food prepared by the next generation of chefs.

French for Fun

Information Restarting 1st October 2021 We try to have fun and enjoy ourselves. We generally include a mixture of listening, speaking, reading and writing in French. We are there to help each other improve our language skills. This is not a group for the absolute beginner but suits people with some knowledge of the language wanting to learn more.

Information Most of our Group have been members since the start of the Ware u3a. Since the beginning of the Pandemic all of our meetings have been held on Zoom, and for the time being this is how we are continuing to meet. We usually start our meetings with news updates from the group, which may spark off conversations between the members, before moving on to another learning device. These have been many over the years from reading French novels in easy French to various courses. We are currently using saliannefrenchfocus.com which has interesting short articles in French, which we can read and then translate.

Friendship & Fun Days

Information The group meet for coffee at the Waterside Inn on the 3rd Monday of each month 11am to 12 pm. At this meeting members come forward with ideas for future things to do together, typically visits to places and events of interest, lunches or local theatres. All Members are welcome to join. If you have recently joined Ware U3A this is a really good way to get to know other members. Why not give it a try?

German Intermediate

Information We enjoy our weekly meeting in a social and relaxed friendly setting. Five members take it in turns to host sessions and long-standing members take it in turns to plan activities. We aim to learn German by reading, speaking, listening and writing the language. Use is made of a course book with exercises and video/audio material. A German magazine downloaded from the internet makes everything very relevant. We would like to think that we have moved beyond the 'phrase book' language , so do grapple often with the grammar of German. This is a mental challenge but we are rewarded with some success! This group's level is A2/B1 .( That's O level / first year A level in old language! ). Currently the group is full.

Painters Trail

Information A fascinating day out involving Munnings and Constable. We meet up with Claire and continue to The Castle House Museum - Alfred Munnings. We have a private visit to browse the paintings in our own time. There is a small cafe for coffee. We then make our way back to Dedham, where Claire will do a short walk to view the Church. Pubs and cafes will be visited for our stop for lunch. During the afternoon we will concentrate on John Constable, visiting East Bergholt before travelling on to Flatford. Claire will do a short, optional guided tour at Flatford, to see the scenes of four John Constable’s paintings including the site of the famous Haywain. Pickleball 1

Information Pickleball is a game that is somewhere between tennis, table tennis and badminton and has been described as like playing table tennis while standing on a large table. However, it is actually played on a Badminton court. It is usual to have four people on a court. Its all the excitement of tennis without the heavy impact and too much running. People can be paired up on the day as required. Costs £4 per session.

Information The first session is free, if you have not played the game before. There on in it's £4 per session. You do not need any special equipment as paddles and balls are provided. Just wear trainers and clothes that are comfortable to exercise in. You don't have to play for the full 2 hours, just play for as long as you want or your legs allow you!

Picknmix

Information We are a social group. Members meet monthly at the Waterside Inn for coffee where we encourage each other to share experiences / interests / ideas and plan activities. Once a month, we also go on a walk in the local area followed by lunch and have a Sunday lunch. Members of the group take it in turn to organise events

Pilates 1

Information Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on balance, posture, strength and flexibility. These fitness classes have been created and run by Jane Bailey, a professional fitness instructor. Resumed at Wodson 19/10/20 The classes are one hour long - 10 minutes warm up, 40 minutes exercise and 10 minutes relaxation, warm down - and feature traditional Pilates exercises as well as modern exercises using webbing belts and soft and prickle balls to add variety. Cost approx £23 for six sessions (number dependant)

Pilates 2

Information Pilates is an excellent all round exercise. It is safe for most people of any age and mobility. Jane our tutor is very good at making us stretch ourselves but never lets us overdo it. The only equipment you will need is a mat. Note: This is a mixed group. The group is now FULL.

Information We are a friendly group with both men and women members who meet for an excellent Pilates session tailored to our group, with exercises at easier and harder levels, suitable for us all. Laura, our tutor, is helpful and makes sure we understand the exercises. She is mindful of any injuries / health problems we may have and takes these into account.

Information If practised regularly, Pilates improves flexibility, builds strength and develops control and endurance in the entire body. It puts emphasis on alignment, breathing, developing a strong core, and improving coordination and balance. Cost: £5 per session, payable at the beginning of the month

Recorders

Information We are a small group, diverse in ability, with some members playing just one recorder and others able to play a range of sizes. When the bass, tenor, treble and descant are played together the sound is beautiful. We play a variety of music ranging from the 1700s to modern recently composed pieces. We are always increasing our repertoire and improving our playing, and get great pleasure from playing together. We have room for players of any standard, including those who may not have picked up a recorder for many years – you might be pleasantly surprised at how much you can still remember from your school days! We have a few instruments which can be borrowed if you do not have your own.

Rummikub

Tai Chi 1

Information In person again at Wodson Park! Waiting list with a view to extra session Tai Chi is a martial art of Chinese origin. The movements are gentle but at the same time exercise every part of the body. As we get older some of us may have a problem with balance and Tai Chi is a great way for improving this. It is Yang style Tai Chi and the class starts with gentle exercises and then we move onto learning various Tai Chi "Forms" eg 24 step. For anyone interested in giving it a try please contact the group leader and a free taster session can be arranged however as of January 2022 we are reaching our maximum capacity but the situation can change and we can start a waiting list for a different day. Information We have reserved 32 tickets for the 'Fawlty Towers' at the Apollo Theatre, London on the 16th October at 2.30pm. We wanted to get in another theatre trip before it gets dark too early, so we need to move quickly to collect the money to secure the tickets. The cost of the theatre, coach and gratuity will be £71.00.

Visiting Churches

Information The group makes visits to varying places of worship, usually Parish Churches in the county of Hertfordshire or over the borders into Essex and Cambridgeshire. Our hosts give us extremely informative talks about their church history, architecture, religious allegiance, notable "residents" both within the building and within the churchyard, famous family connections etc. after which any questions are invited. The opportunity to explore both church and churchyard follows before we depart for an optional lunch at a local hostelry. The trial of extending visits to the City of London Churches on occasions is proving popular. Advised Church. Own arrangements (car share where possible) for getting there £2 collected and gifted to the church visited. Donation encouraged where tea / coffee and biscuits are offered

Waddesdon Manor 3rd & 11th Dec

Information Waddesdon Manor has been booked for a Christmas visit this year. The grounds will be suitably decorated and there is a Christmas market. Walking - Rural Ramblers

Information We currently cannot take any new members. We are a small group and our walks are about five miles. As the name suggests, these are country walks on public footpaths, which occasionally take us across fields and over stiles. Walking boots is the usual footwear and we walk through all weathers except when it is icy. The walks are guided by group members, but there is no pressure to lead a walk if you do not want to. We do not regularly arrange a lunch at the finish although we often start and finish near a pub and so this can be an option.

Walking - Strollers     

When 3rd Wednesday and last Monday of the month
Information We tend to meet at local pubs depending on walk location and car parking facilities. We aim to offer easy sociable walks of three to four miles (about two hours) normally followed by a pub lunch at the pub we started from (lunch optional).Walks are within an eight mile radius of Ware and involve a mixture of paths, tracks, minor roads and bridleways. Group members take turns in planning, pre-walking and leading the walks. More members would be warmly welcomed.

Walking -All Day     

When Last Thursday of the month
Information We walk once a month on the last Thursday of the month. We meet at 9.45 ready for a 10.00am start. Our walks are usually about 10 miles. We normally stop at a pub after a morning walk of 5 or 6 miles and then carry on after lunch. Members are emailed details of each month's walk and asked to let the leader know to expect them. Whenever possible members of the group take turns in organising the walks and pre-book a pub. We walk at a reasonably fast pace and expect walkers to be able to keep up. Walking 1

Information We are a lively group who meet on the second Monday of each month for a walk through our lovely local countryside. Walks normally start and finish at a local pub, where we have the option of staying for either a meal or a drink in convivial company. The walks are usually 5-6 miles long.

Walking 2     

When First AND Third Tuesday

Information This is a group for slightly more energetic walkers. We do a morning walk of between five and six miles on the first AND third Tuesdays of every month. We meet at 9.45am for a 10am start and usually finish by 12.30pm and a pub lunch is then had by most members. Most walks are reasonably local and rarely more than a 20 minute drive to the start. Members share the responsibility of planning and leading walks, but help can be given if needed. We usually have around 18 members walking.

Welsh Intermediate
