Exploring World Faiths

When 3rd Friday Monthly
Venue Centenary Lounge, Keyworth - Streetmap - Google maps
Normally meets 14:00 to 16:00
Information Leader Robin Wilcockson wilcockson665@btinternet.com Following the group's Inaugural Meeting in August 2018 the group continues to evolve with numbers such that our meetings will now normally be in the Centenary Lounge of the Village Hall. Participants are from a range of faith backgrounds, including some from currently practising (Catholic, Methodist, Anglican), a Buddhist involvement, through to some agnostic or no longer practising. What we all share in common is a respect for other people's faiths, and a wish to understand more about all the various world faiths. Our general approach is where possible to get people of a faith to come to tell us about it, or alternatively to research information ourselves and then discuss within the group. In due course we plan to arrange visits to places of faith (such as Sikh Gurdwaras, Synagogues, Mosques etc). We recognise that within most religions (including Christianity) there are sects, denominations and variants along with the mainstream of any one faith. We noted a possible framework to help us be consistent when exploring faiths – six headings of: - 'doctrinal' (major beliefs), 'ritual' (worship), 'ethical' (behaviour), 'experiential' (awareness), 'mythology' (stories or actual history), 'social' (how organised) Initial meetings with guest presenters on Quakerism and Nichiren Buddhism proved most interesting, and generated lively discussion, with Sikhism for our next one. All in all, the group has had a most encouraging start, and has continued to evolve in the time since.

History of Conflict

When 1st Monday monthly
Venue Methodist Church Hall - Streetmap - Google maps
Normally meets 10:00 to 12:00
Information THE HISTORY OF CONFLICT title better reflects the group’s movement on from its former WORLD WAR 1 extensive studies over approx 10 years, [and latterly War & Society.] Our aim is to provide a broader background than previously to highlight how armed conflict has developed over the years and the huge impact it has had on politics and society. As such we have no cut off points in time and scope. Anything from a caveman’s club to the Ukrainian War in 2022 are fair game. We also do not restrict ourselves to the ‘hardware’ of warfare but devote considerable time to ALL the effects, political, economic, geographical and societal. Our GROUP LEADER, currently TONY BROADBENT, will select a series of topics based on member’s interest and publish a timetable running several months ahead. This encourages members to do their own research to compliment that month’s topic. A film and/or a presentation will be run, discussed and complimented by member’s contributions from the floor.
