Cribbage, Backgammon, Dominoes

When Fridays
Venue Daybrook Bowls Club
Normally meets 14:00 to 16:00
Contact tjpears@gmail.com
Information Cribbage (‘crib’) is a card game traditionally for two players, but commonly played with three, four or more. It involves playing and grouping cards in combinations which gain points. Cribbage has several distinctive features: the cribbage board used for scorekeeping, the eponymous crib or box (a separate hand counting for the dealer), with two distinct scoring stages, the play and the show. The objective of the game is to be the first player to score a target number of points, typically 121. It has a unique scoring system where points are scored for card combinations that add up to fifteen, for pairs, triples, quadruples, runs and flushes. It is certainly a game which keeps the brain stimulated and is good practice for your arithmetic skills and strategic decision making!

Contact gordontodd11@gmail.com
Information The Crossword Club concentrates solely on cryptic crosswords, and is aimed at those who are relatively new or inexperienced at solving these puzzles, and want a push start in the techniques required to tackle them. The basic requirement, however, is practice. We can tell you about the different types of clue and how to spot them, but that will only go 10% of the way to becoming an accomplished solver. It’s £1 each per session and we work informally in small groups where we can combine forces to tackle a particular puzzle. New members are welcome to join at any time. If you’ve not been before, ask the group leader for the date of the next meeting.. It will help if you have an interest in words and a warped mind. If you can see that a spanner, apart from being something in your tool box, might also be a bridge, you’ll have a head start.

We explore the brain and some of the cognitive abilities it supports like memory, learning, attention, perception and consciousness. We examine human development – both in terms of growing up and growing old – and discuss the manner in which the behaviour of others affects our own thoughts and behaviour. Information The Supper Club is proving to be very successful. At 6.30pm on a Tuesday evening in the month, a group of 9-10 members meets to eat at a designated venue. The next venue is arranged at the previous meeting. Everyone is either sent an email or phoned to ascertain numbers attending. The number attending is about right for a table at most restaurants but there could be room for another 1 or 2 members

Walks, Long

When 2nd Wednesday, 10.00 - earlier for car share
Venue Various
Normally meets 10:00 to 00:00
Contact Peter.Beastall@btinternet.com
Information We are a friendly walking group and like to stretch our legs, usually covering 8-12 miles. We meet on the second Wednesday of the month, starting time 10.00am. We walk in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, often exploring areas we have not visited before. Usually we join up with the ‘Hikers’ group of Burton Joyce U3A. Although we walk at a steady pace, we do take time to look at the landscape, wild flowers, fungi and anything else of interest along the way. Members of the group volunteer to lead the walks and often have researched facts or history of the area we are visiting. We car-share where possible. All new members welcome.

Walks, Medium 1

When 3rd Wednesday, 10.00
Venue Various
Normally meets 10:00 to 00:00
Contact 0115 956 2667
Information The walks organised for our group are about 6 to 7 miles long, usually on the third Wednesday of the month. We start at 10 o’clock, select our menu choices and enjoy pub lunch at the finish around 1.30. Our Derbyshire Walks are popular in the better weather, but we stay nearer home in the winter when driving is not so good.

Walks, Medium 2

When 3rd Saturday (usually)
Venue Various
Contact 0115 920 9804
Information We use public transport to get to and from walks. Our walks take place on a Saturday, usually the third in the month. However, we occasionally walk on a Friday. Our distance averages 6 or 7 miles and we walk in a fairly purposeful manner. Expect the walk to take 4 hours. We start at about 10am and finish mid-afternoon. We always bring a picnic for the middle of the walk and do not have pub lunches. Because we use public transport we can do linear walks. This is reflected in our programme, where there is a mixture of linear and circular walks. The average attendance at our walks is 15 to 20 people. That sort of number is ideal for buses because we do not want to crowd out the other passengers. It is U3A policy to sign up for activities, so please sign up at the monthly meeting. If that is not possible, please email or phone. If you are ill or not too sure about the weather forecast, you can just decide not to turn up. You do not need to phone. You are not letting anyone down. As with other groups, it is absolutely essential that you wear proper walking boots. Your safety depends on it. We do not want anyone slipping and having a bad accident that could ruin the rest of their lives. Group leader: Stella

Walks, Short

Normally meets 10:30 to 00:00
Contact dieter.hecht@me.com
Information We aim to stay/become fit and to enjoy ourselves and make friends as we walk and talk. We walk about 4-5 miles (depending on the terrain), but, where possible, we aim to plan for short cuts for those who want to take it a bit easier. After the walk, we like to have a pub available for lunch. Our walks start at 10.30am on the second Monday in the month. We aim to choose different locations as our starting points, which are at the most within a radius of 1 hour by car from Arnold. To get to the starting point, car sharing or offering a lift to others is strongly encouraged. Please note that ‘Short Walk Group 1′ is only open to U3A members who have joined Short Walk Group 1 or consider applying to join our group. Currently, there are only a few places left. The membership list will be reviewed once a year in November.
