We've made our way through large anthologies, including one of British shorts (Penguin, V2) and one claiming to include the 100 finest shorts from around the world (but it was largely Western) and a 1000-page tome of which all are translations from around the world. We take occasional detours and have read fairy tales, African shorts, Norse myths and Greek Myths. We surprised ourselves reading 3 anthologies of science fiction classics along side 2 single-author books, and loving the ride! Playreading

Normally meets 14:00 to 17:00
Information Readings begin at 2.00pm prompt. Everyone will have a pre-assigned part which they will have read, as well as the entire play, and have worked out how to perform their character. Usual break halfway through. All members will give a short introduction to their part before we begin. We are an informal group of theatre lovers who enjoy reading plays together, making them come alive, often generating much laughter, through the characters we create. Readings take place every two months, normally on the second Tuesday; sometimes we have another reading on the fourth Tuesday, depending on numbers. We want everyone to feel comfortable in the group, and ‘on the same page’ (literally!), to make sure we have a successful and fun reading. So we have come up with some criteria that we ask each member to abide by: Bring your own copy of the play, as sharing is tricky. We will advise you which edition to buy or borrow. It is really important that we all read from the same edition as the text can vary considerably in different editions. Do read the play at least once beforehand; this is really critical! Think about your character, their interactions, etc., and how best you can bring these out in the reading. Selection and casting the play is quite a long and complex process, so when you are given a part, please do turn up for the reading, or give as much notice as you possibly can, excepting emergencies, of course. And finally, do stay until the end! We always try to have a postreading discussion, needing all of us there to contribute; it’s usually very enlightening and great fun! Looking forward to seeing you!

The fringe theatre group goes to a wide range of fringe plays often but not only in Islington and nearby venues. For example the Kings Head, Old Red Lion, Park, Upstairs at the Gatehouse, Southwark Playhouse, Soho, Arcola. We have a wide range of tastes from the classic to the very modern, drama, comedy and cabaret. Because we visit twice a month there is always plenty of choice. Notice of planned visits is sent out to group members regularly with play details and notice of when we are going. The group is very informal. Each member buys their own ticket, between £12 - £25, which is incredibly good value, and just turns up at the theatre. All visits are in the evening and we meet in the bar about half an hour or so before curtain (if there is one) up and sometimes afterwards depending on when the play ends. We also occasionally meet for a morning coffee in the Park Theatre cafe and have a chat about anything we like that is vaguely related to the theatre.

Waterproof trainers are the best footwear; walking boots are not flexible enough. All walks will be in London Parks and accessible by public transport. They will all start with a warm up and end with a cool down.
