Details The aim is to recap and explain some of the geology mentioned in the recent series ‘Earth’ narrated by Chris Packham and to discuss the implications of various events in the Earth's history which led to extreme climate change and the extinction of species on Earth. Our current use of raw materials, agricultural practices, steel production and, of course, fossil fuels is creating similar atmospheric conditions, thought-provoking to say the least. Richard and Tina hope that a lively discussion will allow everyone to ask questions and to share their views.

Details Each member will choose an aspect of life in the 1950s. They will research and present their findings, using whatever method they like, but this should include 10 - 15 minutes of spoken description. Time will be allowed for a general discussion and sharing of knowledge or experience. Norma adds that, unlike her last course on the 1920s, many of our members were alive in this historical time. As both periods cover the decade after a world war, the comparison should be interesting.

Details Do you enjoy watching films and discussing how you feel about them with others? If so, you may want to take part in this new interest group which will start up in March. We plan to run the group as follows (although we may tweak the format as we go, depending on how successful it is). Each week on a Tuesday, we will select a film that is freely available on BBC iPlayer or Channel 4’s All4 service and send out some details about the film (director, main performers, etc.). You can watch the film at your leisure, and we will then gather via Zoom on the following Monday at 6pm for about an hour to discuss the film, what we thought about it, what we liked/disliked about it and why, and so on. All being well, the first film choice will be selected on 16th March and we will meet to discuss it on 22nd March.

Walking

Details We meet at 10:15 for 10:30 start which is prompt. Our walks are mostly a car ride away so transport is needed but lifts can usually be arranged. We set a steady pace but spend time admiring the view and take a break about half way through. We often stop for coffee at a pub or cafe if the opportunity arises. The walks vary as to flat or hilly, paths and fields and we try not to walk too much on roads. We hope we are a friendly group and will welcome new members.

Details A fun and friendly quiz afternoon for members of Thanet u3a only. Instead of prizes the teams will be competing for the Steve Handley Shield which the winners can keep for a year if they wish.
