Details Formed in January 2015 this group had a very successful and interesting first two years. We focus on artists and subjects of interest to individual members rather than study a specific period or school. Recent topics have ranged from Grayson Perry to Thomas Gainsborough. Discussions are prepared and led either by individuals or small teams. No experience necessary! Some members are new to the subject while others have a long standing interest. Occasional visits to galleries and museums are also on the agenda.

Art Group, The

Details We have a wide ability range from relative beginners to the more accomplished. We express our artistic talents in many mediums: water-colour, oil, acrylic, charcoal, pastels and pen & ink. Members bring their own work to complete, and for still-life aficionados, artefacts are displayed. For those that like to enter, we have our own competitions which are great fun. For inspiration, we put on Art demonstrations; some from our own more experienced member and others are outside presenters.  We have a very happy, enthusiastic and talented membership with a good turnout at each session.

Details World events and the rise in asylum seekers and illegal immigrants are frequently headline news,drawing our attention away from an important related but separate matter:the diversity of peoples and cultures of those settled in the UK, some for generations.What issues arise from this diversity, and what helps or hinders social cohesion? We shall share our views and experiences in an attempt to broaden our perspectives and clarify our thinking. to help us there is Prof.Terry Eagleton's lively book "Culture", notes on Prof.Kwame Anthony Appiah's 2016 Reith Lectures "Identity" and a DVD of young people with very diverse backgrounds sharing how they see their religious identity. Birdwatching

Details The group visits various sites within Wiltshire and adjacent counties where we hear and see a wide variety of bird species. Outings are generally half day with more distant being a full day. The meets leader, Steve Edwards astounds the group with his knowledge of birds, wild flowers and fauna while the formal leader, Brian Davies, attends to the administration

Card Making

Details We are a happy, relaxed group using various techniques and methods to produce individual greetings cards. Members are sometimes doubtful of their own abilities, but with encouragement and a bit of gained confidence get a more than pleasing result. We meet every three months at Burbage Church Centre. You are welcome to join us if you would like to try your hand at making your own cards. A small charge is made to cover the cost of the room. Everyone is expected to have a basic kit. Materials can be supplied but will incur an additional charge.

Details The main emphasis of the group is on Windows based computers. Normally we have a laptop displayed on a TV screen to aid discussion and we have been able to link other devices (such as tablets) to the screen. The group allows people of all levels of experience and expertise to meet and review progress and future plans. The meetings run as a discussion group reviewing members problems, the latest equipment, web sites etc. and whatever else interests the members.

Details We meet at the Group Leader's house on the last Thursday of the month to discuss a topic chosen by the group the previous month.  Subjects are normally open to a matter of opinion and are often important issues facing citizens, the nation or the world.  Led by group members in rotation, sometimes prior thought and maybe research is desirable, sometimes it is not necessary. We may get a consensus, but it is never unanimous.  There is a waiting list to join this group. Cycling

Details Fed up with cleaning muddy boots and scrambling over stiles? Want some exercise in the open air in the beautiful local countryside? Haven't cycled for years but still remember how you enjoyed it? Then why not join us ? We cycle around 20 - 25 miles at a leisurely pace on quiet lanes and cycle paths, and we always stop for coffee and cake at some point on the route. We also have occasional whole day rides when we stop for lunch and cover 30 to 40 miles. We are a very friendly mixed group with currently nineteen members on the books.

Details We are a friendly group owning a variety of camera types.Each month we either go on a photo shoot or set ourselves a topic and individually take photos.At the following meeting we discuss the results,some of us put these photos onto our site on Flickr which can be viewed using a link from the Kennet U3A website. Dog Walking

Details We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month usually starting at 10.30am.The walks take place in many different areas with members of the group volunteering to lead.Steep hills and farming stock are avoided! Details of the meeting place and a short precis of the walk are communicated to members by e mail. It is hoped that those intending to walk notify the walk leader in advance.

Details We are an enthusiastic group. Usually members work on their own projects but there is plenty of help if assistance is required. English Use and Abuse

Details A language the tongue of three tribes 1,500 years ago is today the language of nearly two billion people. With three-times more non-native speakers than native speakers, no other language comes close to matching that. This is what makes English global and so fascinating. Our explorations have included origins of place, river and street names, Dr Johnson's Dictionary, Old English, nursery rhymes, Stanley Unwinisms, words from trades and industries, slang, texting, and finally Famous Last Words!! Details The sister group to English Use and Abuse, we research and discuss a huge variety of topics, from rhyming slang to Proto-Indo-European Roots. We look at reference works, old words, new words, the reform of spelling, the jargon of the film industry and banking, building and gardening. We have devilish quizzes on odd themes like magpie words, eponyms and collective nouns. And when we run out of existing phrases, we invent our own. In short we enjoy every aspect we can imagine of this quirky language of ours.

Details The aim of this group is to learn about and discuss major aspects of human physiology, psychology and health. Details The venue is the Marlborough Bowls Club and runs for the season mid April through September. There is a requirement for people to wear flat shoes on the green. New players can borrow bowls to get them started and the green fee is £2.00. If players wish to join the bowls Club the first year subscription is £25.00 and the green fee is returned.

Details This is a small group for Apple Mac beginners. We cover basic aspects of the system including how to save and recover documents, different ways to make searches and some of the software needed to produce documents. We include talks on surfing the web and emails. We have various discussions that the members themselves choose and discover how to solve many of the more common problems that people experience. There is always something to learn however experienced a user is.This group runs from 10.00 to 12.00.

Details As the group has now reached a stage that is comfortable for everyone, it has been decided not to continue with regular monthly meetings. Details Mahjong is a Chinese game originally, now played all over the world. It is similar to many card games but played with pretty tiles. It is very easy to learn and extremely enjoyable. Details Practical workshops on qigong (sequences of non-martial art movements often mistaken for tai chi). An example of one of these sequences is a Chinese exercise system developed from observing the slow flowing movements of large birds.

Details The venue is Marlborough Leisure Centre costing £2 per person per session (dependent on numbers attending). Players of all abilities are welcomed. Equipment is provided and instruction given. Details Spanish - 2 is now well established as a group of Spanish Improvers and it has already reached its maximum capacity in terms of numbers.  The format is that members discuss topical issues of their own choice, followed by extracts from their own diaries.  After the break, an exercise from the Pasos Course book is completed and we then finish off with a session about Spanish verbs.

Details We meet at 12.15 and aim to be seated (having pre-ordered our meal) by 12.30. Cost is dependent on how much you eat and drink. We are a very informal group and our aim is to discuss any item of interest or concern and if we prove to be a large group there could be several topics at the table at once. If we run out of topics we get out the "Table Talk" cards (hence the name) to keep the conversation flowing without falling into general chatter.

Details This friendly group occupies four tables at Marlborough Leisure Centre. All levels of ability welcome. It's been known that playing Table Tennis will improve your co-ordination and reaction, so do come along and enjoy it. There is normally a small charge made to cover the cost of the court hire. Bats and balls can be provided. Note that we do not meet during school holidays as the hall is booked for children's clubs.

Details Short trips, usually three nights, are organised to different parts of the country. The Group involves members of both Kennet and Pewsey U3As. The trip in May 2017 was " The Historic Houses and Heritage of Cheshire and the Welsh Borders" The October one is " The Historic Houses and Heritage Of Kent" There are no meetings - communication with group members is via email. Walking 1 (Monday)

Details As a group we aim to provide a congenial weekly walk, usually in the countryside and within a reasonable driving distance of Marlborough. The distance is 4 to 4.5 miles and takes about 2 hours.  Most walkers then enjoy lunch and a chat at a nearby pub. Like other U3A walking groups, a full programme only happens with the active participation of all members to plan and lead walks with the support of others if required. The current programme can be viewed on the U3A in Kennet website. Please note: dogs are not permitted.

Walking 2 (Thursday)

Details Group members take turns to plan and lead walks which are usually between 6 and 7 miles long, but are occasionally up to 8 miles. Walks normally start at 10.00 a.m. but longer walks may start earlier with the objective of finishing by 1.00 p.m. Clothing suitable for the forecast weather and strong walking boots are recommended. Walking 3 (Strollers)     

Meets Tuesday, 1st, 3rd, 5th of month

Details Walks are planned to last about one and a half hours (2-3 miles).  See the U3A website for the current Programme. Group members are expected to plan and lead the walks in a rough rota. Dogs are not permitted. Usually the Walk Leader arranges lunch at a pub at the end of the walk for those who wish. Most Group members receive a detailed Programme by email. Those wanting the Programme by post are expected to pay the postage. Members are entitled to participate in other Walking Groups.

Walking 4 (Striders)     

Meets Tuesday, 2nd & 4th of month

Details The Striders group is what it says. The object of each walk is to cover some 12 miles through interesting and beautiful countryside at a sensible distance-walking pace. The aim is to enjoy the walking, the distance, the situation and the conversation. If no conversation were going too fast ! Walkers are expected to take drinks, packed lunches, and be suitably equipped re waterproofs, spare sweaters and any anticipated medications. Wine Appreciation

Details If you enjoy a glass of wine and would like to sample an extended range why not consider joining WAG. We meet once a month to sample around 6 wines, chosen to cover a range of countries, prices, grapes and blends. From time to time we have guest speakers and members presenting the various aspects of this enthralling pastime. We meet every month except August and December. You need no knowledge of wines so come along and give your palate a workout. There is a nominal charge to cover the costs which includes nibbles. A very pleasant way to spend a casual evening.
